Madurai is the natural start for the southern temple corridor and the run down to Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi and Kanyakumari, and for the spice-route climb to Thekkady and Munnar. The run down to Rameswaram crosses to the island on the causeway and is one of the more memorable drives in the state, with a long exposed section that is genuinely worth planning a daylight crossing for. The climb west to Thekkady and Munnar is hill driving proper and takes far longer than the distance suggests.

The old city is the operational challenge. Streets inside the concentric Veli roads around the temple were laid out for foot traffic and are tight for anything long, and during festival periods parts of them are closed altogether. We will ask you to nominate a main road or a hotel forecourt rather than a house address, and during major festivals we will suggest a meeting point further out and a short walk. This is not us being difficult about access; it is the difference between leaving on time and not leaving.

Temple timings rather than daylight tend to set the schedule for groups travelling here, and early starts are normal. Tell us the darshan you are aiming for and we will work the departure time backwards from it.
