About Tirupati
Tirumala is the busiest pilgrimage site in the world by visitor numbers, and understanding that is the whole of planning a trip here. The temple is not the constraint. The queue is, and it can run from an hour with a booked slot to well over fifteen at a weekend on the free darshan.
The town of Tirupati sits on the plain and the temple is at Tirumala, some twenty kilometres uphill by a ghat road that closes to four-wheelers overnight and requires every vehicle to register its entry. That separation catches out first-time visitors who assume the two are the same place.
Beyond the main temple, Tiruchanur's Padmavathi shrine is traditionally visited alongside it, and Chandragiri Fort a short drive away is the remnant of the Vijayanagara successor state — almost nobody on a darshan trip sees it, which is a reasonable argument for staying a night.
Staying there
Accommodation exists both on the plain at Tirupati and up at Tirumala, and they are quite different propositions. Tirumala accommodation is largely temple-administered and closer to the queue; Tirupati has the commercial hotels and the easier access.
If you are staying at Tirumala, be aware that the walk from the vehicle parking to accommodation can be substantial with luggage. Travelling light matters more here than at most destinations.

Questions about Tirupati
How long is the darshan queue?
Anything from about an hour with a booked special-entry slot to well over fifteen hours on free darshan at a weekend or during a festival. It is the single biggest unknown in the day and the reason to plan around the slot rather than the drive.
Can you arrange darshan tickets?
No. Darshan goes through the temple administration's own channels and we take no part in it. Anyone offering to arrange it on your behalf is worth treating with caution. Tell us what you hold and we will build the timing around it.
What is the difference between Tirupati and Tirumala?
Tirupati is the town on the plain; Tirumala is the temple, about twenty kilometres uphill by ghat road. First-time visitors frequently assume they are the same place and plan the day accordingly, which does not work.
Is the ghat road open all night?
No. It closes to four-wheelers overnight, currently around midnight to 3am, with a different window for two-wheelers. Every vehicle registers its entry at the foot and a minimum transit time applies. Timings are set by the temple administration and we confirm them before dispatch.
Should we do it as a day trip or stay overnight?
A day trip works if you hold a booked slot and leave Chennai in the small hours. Relying on the general queue, plan an overnight — a day trip that runs into a fifteen-hour wait ends with a group descending the ghat exhausted.
What about luggage?
Large bags cannot go into the queue and are handled at the luggage centre, where retrieval takes well over an hour on a busy day. Travel light for a day visit and leave what you do not need in the vehicle.
Do we need a permit to get there?
An Andhra Pradesh interstate commercial permit if you are coming from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. We obtain it before dispatch and it is charged at actuals with the receipt.
Is Chandragiri Fort worth visiting?
For most groups it is the surprise of the trip — the Vijayanagara successor capital, a short drive from Tirupati and almost entirely ignored by darshan visitors. It needs the vehicle and about half a morning.
When is the busiest time?
Weekends, school holidays and festival periods, when free-darshan waits can more than double. A weekday outside festival season is a materially different experience for the same journey.
How long does the chauffeur wait?
As long as your darshan takes. The vehicle stays in the designated parking at Tirumala and the chauffeur waits with it, which on a busy day is many hours. That waiting is what you are hiring.
