About Vellore
Vellore Fort is sixteenth-century Vijayanagara work and is still surrounded by a water-filled moat, which is rare — most Indian forts of that period have lost theirs. It changed hands from Vijayanagara to Bijapur, the Marathas, the Mughals and finally the British, and each left something.
The 1806 mutiny happened here, half a century before 1857 and for similar reasons, and it is the fort's other claim on attention. Inside the walls the Jalakandeswarar temple is a working shrine, and the museum is better than a town this size would suggest.
The Sripuram complex a short drive out is entirely modern — a temple clad in gold leaf, built in the 2000s — and it draws large numbers. It involves a substantial walk in from the parking with strict rules on what may be carried, which surprises visitors expecting to be dropped at the door.
Staying there
Vellore has functional hotels serving the medical college rather than tourism, and most groups visit as a day trip from Chennai rather than staying.
If you are combining it with Yelagiri, a night in the hills two hours further west is the better plan than a night in Vellore.

Can we combine it with Kanchipuram?
Yes, and we would suggest it. Kanchipuram is a short detour on the same route and the two together make a full day rather than a half-empty one. Kanchipuram's midday closing shapes the order.
How long is the drive from Chennai?
Around 140 km and two and a half to three hours on fast four-lane highway. It is the shortest and easiest run we operate from Chennai.
Do we need a permit?
No. Vellore is in Tamil Nadu and the drive from Chennai crosses no state line. Tolls on the Bengaluru highway are charged at actuals.
What happened here in 1806?
A mutiny among Indian soldiers of the East India Company garrison, half a century before 1857 and for broadly similar reasons. It is the fort's other claim on attention beyond the architecture.
Is it suitable for older family members?
The drive certainly is, and the fort involves moderate walking on level ground. Sripuram's walk in is the one to check, and the reason to tell us in advance if mobility is a concern.
When is the best time to visit?
November to February. Vellore is inland and genuinely hot from March to June, and both the fort and the Sripuram walk are largely unshaded.
Can we extend it to Yelagiri?
Yes, and it makes a good overnight — Yelagiri is two hours further west. Vellore on the way out, a night in the hills, back the next day. It is the shortest hill night available from Chennai.
How long do we need at the fort?
A comfortable morning covers the ramparts, the temple inside and the museum. Two hours if you are moving briskly, longer if you want to walk the walls properly.
