About Wayanad
Wayanad is a plateau rather than a peak, sitting at around 900 metres on the Kerala side of the Western Ghats. That gives it a different feel from the Tamil Nadu hill stations — paddy terraces and spice plantations rather than tea and colonial architecture, and forest that comes right up to the fields.
Getting there is the defining constraint. Every approach from Karnataka crosses reserve forest that closes to through traffic overnight, and every approach from anywhere crosses a state line into Kerala with an interstate permit. From Mysuru it is under four hours; from Bengaluru six or seven. That difference decides how many days a trip needs.
Two things here need arranging in advance and are the most common reason a Wayanad itinerary disappoints. Chembra Peak has a daily visitor cap and its own permit process. Muthanga safari runs in the forest department's own vehicles on fixed slots. Neither can be produced on the morning.
Staying there
Resorts and homestays are scattered widely across the plateau rather than clustered in a town, and many sit on narrow estate approaches. Sultan Bathery and Kalpetta are the practical reference points, but properties can be a considerable drive from either.
Send us the property name at booking. The approach matters more here than the address, and a resort that looks central on a map can be twenty minutes down a track.

Questions about Wayanad
How is Wayanad different from the Tamil Nadu hill stations?
It is a plateau rather than a peak, at around 900 metres, with paddy terraces and spice plantations rather than tea and colonial architecture. Forest comes right up to the fields. It feels wilder and less built up than Ooty or Kodaikanal.
How long does it take to get there?
Under four hours from Mysuru, six to seven from Bengaluru. Unlike the Ooty comparison, starting from Mysuru genuinely does roughly halve the journey because it skips a long highway stretch rather than a slow forest one.
Do we need a permit?
Yes, a Kerala interstate commercial permit whichever direction you approach from, arranged before dispatch and charged at actuals. Approaches from Karnataka also cross reserve forest, which closes to through traffic overnight.
Can we climb Chembra Peak?
With a permit, and there is a daily cap on visitors. It must be arranged in advance rather than decided on the day, and it is one of the two most common reasons a Wayanad trip disappoints.
How do safaris work at Muthanga?
In the forest department's own vehicles on fixed slots. Private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. Book the slot yourself and tell us the timing so the day is built around it.
How many days do we need?
Three nights from Mysuru, four from Bengaluru given the drive. Two means choosing between Chembra, Edakkal and the falls rather than doing all three.
What are the forest road timings?
The reserves close to through traffic overnight, currently 9pm to 6am, with no exemption for tourist vehicles. Reaching a gate late means waiting until morning on the wrong side of it. We confirm the current position before dispatch.
When should we not go?
The monsoon is dramatic and difficult — wet plateau roads, leeches on the walks, and Chembra and the falls sometimes closed. October to March is easier by a wide margin.
Can a 17 seater reach our resort?
Sometimes. Wayanad properties are scattered with narrow estate approaches and some cannot take a seven-metre vehicle. Send us the property name at booking and we will check before you travel.
Can we combine Wayanad with Ooty or Coorg?
Both work as circuits and both are governed by forest gate timings rather than distances. Our Nilgiris and Wayanad loop does exactly that across three states in under 800 km.
