Why an Urbania for this route
Wayanad from Bengaluru is a long day made longer by everything that is not road. Two hundred and eighty kilometres, of which the first half is fast four-lane and the second half is forest road with enforced limits, a state border, and a ghat climb onto the plateau. Six to seven hours is honest, and that assumes you cleared Bengaluru early.
The forest is what governs the plan. The route runs through Bandipur and then Muthanga, and the stretch closes to through traffic overnight — currently between 9 pm and 6 am, though timings are set by the forest departments and we confirm them before dispatch. Reaching the gate late does not mean a slow finish; it means waiting until morning. Every Wayanad departure we plan is built backwards from that.
The Kerala crossing adds an interstate commercial permit, which we obtain before dispatch rather than negotiate at the border. It is not expensive and it is not optional, and a quote that omits it is quoting for a different journey.
Which Urbania should you choose?
The 13 seater suits most groups. The forest road and the ghat are both manageable in a 17 seater, but Wayanad's resorts are scattered across the plateau with narrow estate approaches, and the shorter vehicle reaches more of them.
Luggage matters more here than on a weekend hill trip, because Wayanad tends to be a three- or four-night stay rather than two. Twelve people with real luggage fills a 13 seater properly, so tell us the bag count rather than the headcount and we will size it on that.
Suggested itinerary
- Mysuru — Roughly halfway, and the obvious breakfast halt with room for a long vehicle.
- Gundlupet — Last town before the reserve. Fuel here; there is nothing inside the forest.
- Bandipur & Muthanga — Through two reserves and across the state line. No stopping inside, and the road closes overnight.
- Sultan Bathery or Kalpetta — On the plateau. Most resorts are a further drive from here.

Road notes
Fast four-lane to Mysuru, then forest road with enforced speed limits, then the ghat onto the plateau. Two reserves and a state border in the middle of it, which is why the timing is governed by gates rather than by distance.
Season
October to March is the easier season. The monsoon is dramatic and difficult — the plateau roads are wet, leeches make walks unpleasant, and Chembra and the falls can close. April and May are warm at the base and pleasant on the plateau.
Getting around at Wayanad
Keep the vehicle. Wayanad's attractions are genuinely spread — Edakkal, Chembra, Banasura Sagar and Soochipara are each a substantial drive apart on plateau roads, and local transport for a group of twelve is impractical.
Two things need planning rather than improvising. Chembra Peak has a daily visitor cap and its own permit process, and Muthanga safari runs in the forest department's vehicles on fixed slots. Both need arranging in advance; neither is something we can produce on the morning.

How does Wayanad compare with Coorg?
Wayanad is greener, wilder and further — a three- or four-night destination rather than a weekend. Coorg is closer, more developed and easier to reach. From Bengaluru, Coorg is the weekend and Wayanad is the holiday.
Which seater should we take?
The 13 seater for most groups. Both the forest road and the ghat suit any of the three, but resort approaches on the plateau are narrow and the shorter vehicle reaches more of them. Watch the luggage on a longer stay.
Is the monsoon a good time to go?
It is at its most dramatic and its most difficult. Plateau roads are wet, leeches make walks unpleasant, and Chembra and the waterfalls can close. October to March is the easier season by a wide margin.
Can we do a safari at Muthanga?
Yes, in the forest department's own vehicles on fixed slots — private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. Book the slot yourself and tell us the timing, and we will build the day around it.
How many days do we need?
Three nights minimum given the drive. Two means most of your trip is in the vehicle. Four lets you do Edakkal, Chembra and the falls without the days turning into a schedule.
Can we combine Wayanad with Ooty or Coorg?
Both work as circuits, and both are governed by the same forest gate timings rather than by distance. A Wayanad and Ooty loop through Gudalur is popular and needs the day built around the closures. Ask us and we will lay out something that actually works.
Where do we stop on the way?
Mysuru for breakfast at roughly the halfway point, and Gundlupet as the last town before the reserve — fuel there, because there is nothing inside the forest and stopping within it is not permitted.
