About Thanjavur
The Brihadeeswarar temple was completed around 1010 under Rajaraja Chola and is the reason to come. Its vimana rises about sixty-six metres and was, for centuries, the tallest structure in India — built entirely of granite in a delta with no granite, hauled from quarries some distance away.
The Cholas ran a maritime empire from here reaching Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and the temple is as much a statement of that as a religious building. The inscriptions cut into its base are an administrative record — endowments, staff, land grants — rather than devotional text, which is unusual and makes the base worth reading if you have a guide.
The palace quarter next door is Nayak and later Maratha work layered on top of each other, and it holds the Saraswathi Mahal Library, one of the oldest working libraries in Asia. Almost every group visiting the great temple walks past it without going in.
Staying there
Thanjavur has functional hotels rather than destination ones, and most groups use it as a base for the delta rather than as an end in itself. The temple and the palace quarter are close together and walkable from parking.
Kumbakonam, about an hour away, is the alternative base if the wider delta and the Navagraha temples are the point.

How long do we need at the Brihadeeswarar temple?
A morning rather than an hour. It is a thousand years old and among the finest things standing in India, and groups who allow forty minutes regret it. The granite takes the light best early or late.

Do we need a permit?
No. Thanjavur is in Tamil Nadu and the usual approaches from Madurai or Chennai cross no state line. Tolls are charged at actuals.
How much walking is involved?
A good deal, barefoot on stone inside the temple complex, which is hot underfoot from mid-morning. The palace quarter is easier. Tell us if anyone has difficulty walking.

Yes if you are coming from Madurai — Trichy sits directly on the route and Srirangam is the largest functioning temple complex in the world. Fitting both into one day needs an early start because of the midday closing.
