About Bandipur
Bandipur was a Mysore maharaja's hunting reserve before it became one of India's first tiger reserves under Project Tiger in 1973. It now forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere, the largest contiguous protected habitat in southern India, running into Nagarahole to the north, Mudumalai to the south and Wayanad to the west.
The single most important practical fact is that the road through it closes to through traffic overnight — currently 9pm to 6am, every day, with no exemption for tourist vehicles. That decides more Bandipur itineraries than the distance from anywhere. A dawn safari cannot be reached by driving out that morning; you have to be on the fringe the night before.
Safaris run in the forest department's own vehicles from the safari centre. Private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes at all, so your own vehicle waits — a point worth knowing before anyone offers you a safari in a private van.
Staying there
Resorts and homestays line the fringe on the Gundlupet side and towards the Nagarahole boundary, mostly outside the reserve itself. Approach roads vary from surfaced drives to rough tracks.
Staying on the fringe the night before is not optional if a dawn safari is the point of the trip. Build the itinerary around that rather than around the drive.

Questions about Bandipur
Can we drive from Mysore for a dawn safari?
No. The forest road is closed to through traffic overnight, so you cannot arrive before a first-light safari by setting out that morning. You have to be on the fringe the night before — it is the most common planning mistake here.
What are the forest road timings?
Currently 9pm to 6am, every day, for wildlife protection, with no exemption for tourist vehicles. They are set by the forest department and do change, so we confirm the current position before dispatch.
Can our Urbania go on the safari?
No. Safaris run in the forest department's own vehicles from the safari centre and private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. Anyone offering a safari in a private van is not offering a legitimate safari.
How do we book a safari?
Through the forest department. Slots fill at weekends and during school holidays and we cannot reserve them. Book yours first and tell us the timing, and we will build the day around it.
When are sightings best?
March to May, when it is hot and animals concentrate around water. October to February is far more comfortable to travel in. Nothing is guaranteed in any season, and anyone promising you a tiger is selling something.
Is Gopalaswamy Betta worth adding?
For most groups it is the highlight after the safari — a hill temple with a long view over the forest. It has its own access timings and a vehicle restriction near the top, so it needs planning into the day.
Can we stop inside the reserve?
No. Stopping is not permitted, speed limits are enforced and wildlife crossings are frequent. Gundlupet before the gate is the last place to stop, refuel and buy anything.
Do we need a permit to reach Bandipur?
Not an interstate one if Bandipur is the destination, since it is in Karnataka. Continuing south into Mudumalai or west into Wayanad crosses a state line and does require one.
How does it compare with Nagarahole?
Nagarahole's Kabini side has a stronger reputation for sightings and is quieter. Bandipur is easier to reach and pairs naturally with an onward trip to Ooty. For wildlife alone most people would choose Kabini.
How long should we stay?
Two nights if a dawn safari matters, because the overnight closure means arriving the day before. That gives you an afternoon safari and a morning one, which is the right minimum.
