About Palani
Palani is one of the six principal Murugan shrines, and the one associated with the story of the fruit and the quarrel that sent Murugan away from Kailash — palam nee, the fruit you are, from which the name comes. The shrine sits on a hill above the town and the ascent is by winch or on foot.
The idol is traditionally said to be made of navapashanam, an amalgam of nine minerals, rather than stone, which is unusual and is why the abhishekam substances there are treated differently. Whether or not one accepts the tradition, it shapes the practice at the shrine in ways a visitor notices.
The town below is a working pilgrimage town rather than a destination, and most groups combine Palani in the east with the Isha centre and the Velliangiri foothills west of Coimbatore. That crossing makes a full day rather than the half-day the distances suggest.

When is the best time to visit?
October to February. March to June is hot and the waiting is in the open, which matters more than the drive, since the drive is short and flat.

Thirumoorthy hills and dam are within reach, and the Velliangiri foothills west of Coimbatore. Beyond that Palani is a shrine rather than a region, which is why it works as a day trip.
