About Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal sits in the Palani hills at around 2,130 metres and is the hill station most people prefer once they have seen both it and Ooty. It is greener, quieter and less built up, and the shola forest around it gives it a character the Nilgiris do not quite have.
The trade is access. Every approach involves a long sustained climb — from Madurai it is three hours, from Chennai closer to ten — and afternoon cloud commonly closes visibility on the upper ghat. That is why every itinerary we plan here has the climb in the morning, and why a late departure costs more than the hours it takes.
The town is walkable for the lake, Coaker's Walk and Bryant Park. Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves and the upper viewpoints are strung along the ridge road and need the vehicle. Berijam Lake sits inside a reserved forest with a permit and a daily vehicle cap, which is the one thing here that cannot be arranged on the morning.
Staying there
Accommodation ranges from lakeside hotels in the middle of the town to quieter properties along the ridge roads. The centre is convenient and congested in season; the outer properties are calmer and make the vehicle essential rather than useful.
Parking near the lake is limited and fills between April and June, so a property with its own parking is worth more in season than it looks on a map.

How does Kodaikanal compare with Ooty?
Greener, quieter and less built up, and most people who see both prefer it. Ooty is easier to reach and has more within walking distance. Kodaikanal's shola forest and ridge viewpoints are what set it apart.
When should we visit?
October to March for the clearest conditions and the coldest nights. April to June is peak season, when the town fills and parking near the lake becomes genuinely difficult.
How long does it take to get there?
Three to three and a half hours from Madurai, which is by far the easiest approach. From Chennai it is nine to ten hours and a very different proposition — we would suggest Yercaud instead for a Chennai weekend.
Why do you insist on morning departures?
Afternoon cloud commonly closes visibility on the upper ghat, and the climb is long and continuous with genuine drops. Arriving in clear light matters more here than on most of our hill routes.
Can we visit Berijam Lake?
Only with a forest permit obtained in advance, and there is a daily cap on vehicles. It cannot be decided on the morning. Tell us at booking and we will say honestly whether it is achievable for your dates.
How many days do we need?
Two nights minimum. One night from Madurai is possible and rushed; from Chennai it is twenty hours of driving for a single day. Three nights lets you cover the ridge viewpoints properly.
How cold does it get?
Cold enough to matter at night from December to February. Groups coming up from Madurai or Chennai consistently underpack, and the warm clothing adds real luggage volume.
Do we need the vehicle while we are there?
For anything beyond the lake and Coaker's Walk, yes. Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves and the upper viewpoints are strung along the ridge road and are not walkable from the town.
Is the ghat difficult for a long vehicle?
Well surfaced and steadily graded rather than technical, but long and continuous. A 17 seater manages it with an experienced chauffeur; the 13 is more comfortable and easier to park in the congested centre.
Is the monsoon worth it?
It is green and atmospheric and the upper ghat sits in cloud, so views are the casualty rather than access. The roads stay open and we add time rather than pressing on.
