About Rameswaram
Rameswaram is an island at the end of a sandspit, reached by a bridge across shallow turquoise water, and one of the four Char Dham. The Ramanathaswamy temple has the longest corridors of any temple in India — over a thousand metres of pillared passages, which is the thing people remember rather than any single shrine.
The 22 theerthams inside the complex are wells at which pilgrims are traditionally bathed in sequence, and it is a wet, crowded and physically involving process rather than a walk past. Groups who arrive not expecting that find the morning longer than planned.
Dhanushkodi, twenty kilometres further out at the tip, is the other half of the trip and for many the better half. The town there was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964 and never rebuilt, and the road now runs out on a narrow strip of sand with sea on both sides.
Staying there
Accommodation on the island is functional rather than luxurious, clustered near the temple and along the shore. A night here is what turns a rushed twelve-hour day trip from Madurai into a comfortable trip, and it means seeing Dhanushkodi in evening light.
Streets near the temple are narrow and crowded; properties on the outer roads are easier for a long vehicle to reach and only a short drive from the temple.

Questions about Rameswaram
How long do we need at Rameswaram?
One night minimum. The temple and its theerthams take a morning and Dhanushkodi deserves an afternoon, which is a full day before you have driven anywhere. A day trip from Madurai is possible and rushed.
What are the theerthams?
Twenty-two wells inside the temple complex at which pilgrims are traditionally bathed in sequence. It is a wet, crowded and physically involving process rather than a walk past, and groups who do not expect that find the morning longer than planned.
How close can the vehicle get to the temple?
Not close. The streets around it are narrow, crowded and effectively one-way regardless of signage. The chauffeur drops at the nearest workable point and holds in a designated area, which means a short walk.
Is Dhanushkodi worth the extra drive?
For most groups it is the highlight. The road runs out at the tip of a narrow spit with sea on both sides, where a town was destroyed by a cyclone in 1964 and never rebuilt. The late-afternoon light there is the best of the trip.
Is the road to Dhanushkodi always open?
Usually, but it is exposed and can close in bad weather, particularly during the northeast monsoon. We check before setting off rather than driving a group twenty kilometres to a barrier.
Can we stop on the Pamban bridge?
No — stopping is not permitted and it would be unsafe with the crosswind. The view is taken at driving pace. There are viewpoints on the approaches on either side where a long vehicle can pull in.
Do we need a permit?
Not from Madurai or anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Coming from Kerala or Karnataka an interstate commercial permit applies, which we arrange before dispatch.
When is the best time to visit?
October to February. The island is flat and exposed with almost no shade, and a temple visit involving a lot of barefoot walking on hot stone from March to June is hard work for anyone.
How much walking is involved?
A great deal. The corridors alone are over a kilometre, the theerthams involve moving around the complex, and it is barefoot throughout. Tell us if anyone has difficulty walking — it changes where we drop and what we would suggest attempting.
Can we combine it with Kanyakumari?
Yes, as a two- or three-night circuit from Madurai. Both in one day does not work — they are far apart and the day becomes almost entirely driving.
