About Valparai
Valparai sits on a plateau in the Anamalai range, and the reason it exists is tea. The estates were carved out of rainforest from the 1890s onward, which left the plantations sitting in fragments of the original forest rather than replacing it wholesale. That accident of history is why the wildlife here is unlike anywhere else in the tea country.
The lion-tailed macaque is the species Valparai is known for. It is one of the rarest primates in the world, found only in the Western Ghats rainforest, and the fragmented estates around Valparai hold one of its more viable populations. Seeing one is genuinely possible here and effectively impossible in the Nilgiris.
Elephants move through the estates as a matter of routine rather than as an event, which shapes daily life in a way visitors do not expect — estate workers and residents plan around herd movements, and the plantations are a corridor rather than a barrier. It is the closest thing in South India to staying inside a working wildlife landscape rather than beside one.
Staying there
Estate bungalows are what Valparai does, some of them converted planters' houses from the early decades, spread across the plateau rather than clustered. The town is small and functional and not somewhere to stay for its own sake.
There is very little in the way of restaurants, so most properties include meals — worth confirming when you book rather than assuming you will find something in the evening. The plateau is quiet after dark in a way that suits some groups and unsettles others.

The same tea country with a fraction of the visitors and a considerably harder road. If your group wants quiet estates and walking, Valparai. If they want a hill town with things to do, Ooty.
Is there much to do in the town?
Very little, and that is most of the appeal. The interest is the estates, the dams and the reserve. Groups wanting restaurants and shops will be happier at Ooty or Coonoor, and we would rather say so.
Can we do it as a day trip?
Possible and not advisable — seven hours of driving including the hardest ghat we run, for a few hours at the top. Two nights is when Valparai becomes the trip people come back talking about.
How old are the estates?
Planting began in the 1890s and many of the bungalows are converted planters' houses from the early decades. The layout of the plantations still follows the original clearances, which is why forest fragments sit between them.
Is there anywhere to eat?
Almost entirely at your property. There is very little in the way of restaurants on the plateau, so most places include meals — confirm when you book rather than assuming you will find something at nine in the evening.
Can we continue to Athirappilly?
Yes, and it is spectacular, but it crosses into Kerala and needs an interstate commercial permit arranged before dispatch. Tell us at booking rather than deciding over breakfast.
Where do we eat?
