About Pondicherry
Pondicherry was French until 1954, and the part people come for is the small grid of streets between the canal and the sea where that is still visible — mustard and white walls, shuttered windows, bougainvillea, and street names in two languages. It is genuinely compact, perhaps a kilometre across, and best walked.
The rest of the town is an ordinary and busy Tamil town, which surprises visitors who expected the whole place to look like the postcards. That is worth knowing when choosing where to stay, because the difference between a hotel inside the quarter and one a kilometre away is the difference between walking everywhere and driving.
It is also a Union Territory rather than part of Tamil Nadu, which has practical consequences beyond the architecture: different excise rules, and a commercial vehicle permit for any hired vehicle entering, even though the drive from Chennai never leaves the coast.
Staying there
Stay inside the French Quarter if you can. Heritage properties in restored colonial houses are what the place does best, and being able to walk to dinner is most of the point. Streets there are narrow and some are pedestrianised in the evening, so expect the vehicle to drop at the promenade end.
Beach hotels north of the town are a different trip — quieter, with more space, and needing the vehicle for everything including dinner.

Why does Pondicherry need a permit?
Because it is a Union Territory rather than part of Tamil Nadu, so a commercial vehicle permit applies to any hired vehicle entering. The drive from Chennai never leaves the coast, which is why it surprises people. We arrange it before dispatch.
How big is the French Quarter?
Small — perhaps a kilometre across, between the canal and the sea. That is the part people come for, and it is genuinely walkable. The rest of the town is an ordinary busy Tamil town, which surprises visitors expecting the postcards to extend further.
Can the vehicle get into the quarter?
Only to the edge. The streets are narrow and several are pedestrianised in the evenings, so the chauffeur drops at the promenade end and holds outside. Expect to walk the last few hundred metres to a heritage hotel.
Do we need the vehicle while we are there?
Not for a day in the quarter, and we will say so rather than bill for it waiting. Keep it for Auroville, Paradise Beach or an onward leg south. It is one of the few destinations where releasing the vehicle genuinely makes sense.
How long should we stay?
Two nights inside the quarter is right. Three if Auroville and the beaches matter. A day trip from Chennai works but gives you an afternoon rather than an evening, and the quarter is at its best after dark.
Is Auroville worth visiting?
Half a morning rather than a day for most groups, and visitor access to the Matrimandir needs arranging in advance rather than turning up. Tell us if you plan it so the day is built around the timing.
When should we not go?
October to December carries the northeast monsoon, which brings heavy rain to this coast and standing water on parts of the ECR. It rarely stops the trip but beach time is the casualty.
Can we stop at Mahabalipuram on the way?
Yes, and you should. It sits a third of the way down the ECR from Chennai and deserves an hour rather than a photograph. Tell us at booking so the day is planned with it rather than around it.
Is it good for families with children?
Very. No ghats, no altitude, short drives, a beach and a walkable centre. It is the destination we suggest most often for a group that has been put off by the hill route descriptions.
What about the alcohol question?
It is taxed differently as a Union Territory, which is why it comes up. Carrying quantities back across the boundary is a matter for the excise rules, and our chauffeurs will not carry stock on a customer's behalf.
