About Kochi
Kochi has been a trading port for well over six hundred years and has been in turn Portuguese, Dutch and British, which is unusual even by Indian standards and is visible in a few streets of Fort Kochi rather than across the city. St Francis Church is the oldest European church in India; Vasco da Gama was buried there before his remains were moved to Lisbon.
The cantilevered fishing nets on the waterfront predate the Portuguese and are the image everyone knows. They are still worked, though as much for visitors now as for fish, and they are best seen at dawn or at sunset when the light does the work.
Mattancherry and Jew Town are the other half — the synagogue, the spice warehouses and the antique trade, in streets narrow enough that walking is the only sensible way through. Modern Ernakulam across the water is a large ordinary Indian city, which surprises visitors who expected the whole place to look like the old quarter.
Staying there
Fort Kochi's heritage properties, many in restored Dutch and Portuguese houses, are what the place does best and are worth the premium over Ernakulam. The quarter is compact and walkable, and being able to walk to dinner is most of the point.
Streets there are narrow and several are one-way, so the vehicle drops near the waterfront and holds outside. Ernakulam is cheaper and better connected and means driving in every day.

Questions about Kochi
Should we stay in Fort Kochi or Ernakulam?
Fort Kochi if you can. The quarter is compact, walkable and is what people come for. Ernakulam across the water is a large ordinary city — cheaper and better connected, but it means driving in every day.
Can the vehicle get into Fort Kochi?
Only to the edge. The streets are narrow and several are one-way, so the chauffeur drops near the waterfront and holds outside the quarter. That is also how the place is best seen — on foot.
Do we need the vehicle every day?
Not for a day in the quarter, and we will say so rather than bill for it waiting. Keep it for Cherai beach, the backwaters, an onward leg or an early flight.
How long to the airport?
Longer than anyone expects. It sits well north of the city and the run through morning traffic is the least predictable part of any Kochi trip. We build in more margin than seems necessary.
Are the fishing nets worth seeing?
At dawn or sunset, yes — that is when the light does the work. They predate the Portuguese and are still worked, though as much for visitors now as for fish.
Do we need a permit?
Yes, a Kerala interstate commercial permit if you are coming from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka, obtained before dispatch and charged at actuals with the receipt.
What is there in Mattancherry?
The synagogue, the spice warehouses and the antique trade, in streets narrow enough that walking is the only sensible way through. It is a short drive or a long walk from Fort Kochi.
How long should we stay?
Two nights in the quarter. The old town needs an evening and a morning rather than an afternoon, which is why a day trip from Coimbatore does not really work.
Can we combine it with Munnar or Alleppey?
Both work, and Kochi is the usual start or end point for a Kerala circuit. Munnar is a climb inland, Alleppey the backwaters south. Ask us and we will lay out something that drives sensibly.
When is the Biennale?
December of alternate years, and it fills the old quarter. Worth planning for deliberately if it interests you, and worth knowing about if it does not, because accommodation tightens considerably.
