The Kabini backwaters on the southern edge of Nagarahole. The reservoir was created in the 1970s and the shoreline it left is why this side of the reserve has the reputation it does — animals come to open water, and open water is where they can be seen.

Why this circuit
This circuit strings together the three things the Western Ghats do better than anywhere else in the south — coffee country, plantation walking and wildlife — and it does it without a single long transfer day. The longest leg is the first, and after that nothing exceeds 180 km. That makes it the gentlest of our multi-day circuits and the one we suggest most often for mixed groups.
It also has the most rigid timing, for a reason that has nothing to do with distance. The reserve roads at Nagarahole close to through traffic overnight and safari slots are fixed, so day five has to land you on the fringe before the gate shuts, and day six is built around a dawn safari that cannot be reached by driving out that morning. Everything else in the circuit is flexible; those two are not.
The other thing worth understanding is where a road vehicle stops. Mullayanagiri's summit and Hebbe Falls are reached by rough track that estate jeeps handle, and safaris run in the forest department's own vehicles. That is not a limitation of the Urbania — it is how these places work. Your vehicle covers the 950 km between them and waits while the local transport does the last mile.
Which Urbania
The 13 seater, and on this circuit we mean it more firmly than on most. Both Chikmagalur and Coorg are estate country where properties sit on narrow, often unsurfaced lanes with steep entrances, and a 17 seater that drives the highways comfortably can still be stopped by a gatepost.
Send us the property names for both estates when you book. We check the approaches before the circuit runs, because discovering on the third evening that the vehicle cannot reach the door is a problem with no good solution at that hour. Occasionally two smaller vehicles genuinely serve a large group better on this particular circuit.
Day by day
- Day 1 Bangalore to Chikmagalur 245 km
West to the Baba Budan range. Arrive at an estate with the afternoon left; the last few kilometres are plantation lane rather than road.
- Day 2 Chikmagalur 70 km
Mullayanagiri and Hebbe Falls, with estate jeeps for the final rough stretches. An estate walk in the afternoon, which is the real reason to come.
- Day 3 Chikmagalur to Coorg 180 km
South through Hassan and Kushalnagar, with Bylakuppe monastery a short detour worth taking. Into the Coorg plantations by evening.
- Day 4 Coorg 90 km
Abbey Falls, Talakaveri and Dubare, spread widely enough that the vehicle works all day. Coffee estate walk if the weather holds.
- Day 5 Coorg to Nagarahole 90 km
A short transfer to the Kabini side, timed to arrive before the reserve road closes for the evening. Afternoon safari if the slot allows.
- Day 6 Nagarahole to Mysore or Bangalore 275 km
Dawn safari, then out. Ending at Mysuru is a comfortable morning; Bengaluru makes it a full day.

Safari slots are booked through the forest department and we cannot reserve them. They fill at weekends and during school holidays. Book them first and tell us the timings, because days five and six are built backwards from the slot rather than the other way round.
The forest road closure is the hard constraint of the whole circuit. Reserve roads shut to through traffic overnight, and arriving at the gate late does not mean a slow finish — it means waiting until morning, on the wrong side, with your accommodation on the other. We plan day five with a comfortable margin and confirm the current timings before dispatch, since they are set by the forest department.
Season splits this circuit in a way worth deciding deliberately. October to February is far more comfortable to travel in. March to May is hot but gives the better sightings, as animals concentrate at the Kabini water. The monsoon is green and quiet and hard on estate roads. There is no single right answer, only a trade — tell us which half of the circuit matters more to you and we will say which months suit.

Questions about this circuit
How demanding is this circuit?
It is the gentlest of our multi-day trips. The longest leg is day one at 245 km and nothing after it exceeds 180 km. That is why we suggest it most often for mixed groups with children or older relatives.
Can we drive from Mysore for the dawn safari on the last day?
No, and this is the constraint the whole circuit is built around. Reserve roads close to through traffic overnight, so a first-light safari means being on the fringe the night before. Day five exists precisely to put you there.
Can our Urbania go on the safari?
No. Safaris run in the forest department's own vehicles and private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. Your Urbania waits at the safari centre. Anyone offering a safari in a private van is not offering a legitimate safari.
How do we book safari slots?
Through the forest department, and they fill at weekends and in school holidays. Book first, then tell us the timings — days five and six are planned backwards from your slot.
Why do we need estate jeeps at Chikmagalur?
Because the final stretches to Mullayanagiri's summit and to Hebbe Falls are rough track rather than road. That is normal for those places and not a limitation of the Urbania. We get you to the transfer point and the jeeps finish the climb.
Do we need a permit?
Not as written — the circuit stays within Karnataka throughout. Extending south into Wayanad crosses into Kerala and does need a commercial permit, which we would arrange before dispatch.
When is the best time to go?
It depends what you came for. October to February is much more comfortable. March to May gives better sightings as animals concentrate at the Kabini water. The monsoon is green, quiet and hard on estate roads. Tell us which half matters more and we will advise.
Can a 17 seater do this circuit?
On the roads, easily. At the properties, not always — both Chikmagalur and Coorg are estate country with narrow, often unsurfaced approach lanes. Send us the property names at booking and we will check before you travel rather than at the gate.
Will we definitely see wildlife?
No, and nobody can promise otherwise. Kabini has a good reputation and the shoreline draws animals to open water, but sightings are luck. An operator guaranteeing a tiger is selling something rather than telling you the truth.
Can we add Bandipur as well?
It adjoins Nagarahole to the south and adds a night. Whether it is worth it depends on whether you want a second reserve or more time in one — most groups get more from two safaris at Kabini than one each at two reserves. Ask us and we will lay out both.
What is included?
The vehicle and chauffeur for six days, fuel, and driver batta each day, with tolls and parking at actuals against receipts. Safari tickets, estate jeeps, accommodation, meals and entry fees are not included.
Can we start and end at Mysore?
Yes, and it makes the circuit shorter and better. Mysuru is closer to both Coorg and Nagarahole than Bengaluru is, so starting and ending there cuts roughly 250 km and most of a day's driving from the trip.
