Why an Urbania for this route
This is a long day and we would rather lead with that than bury it. Five hundred and twenty kilometres and nine to ten hours, of which eight are unremarkable highway and the last is a sustained hairpin climb. The difficulty is concentrated at exactly the point when everyone in the vehicle is already tired, which is why the departure time matters more here than on almost any route we run.
Before five in the morning is not us being dramatic. A seven o'clock start from Chennai puts you on the Batlagundu ghat in the late afternoon, when cloud commonly closes visibility on the upper bends, or after dark. Neither is a road to meet at the end of a ten-hour day. Leaving at half past four means arriving in daylight with the climb done in clear air.
It also means two nights rather than one. A single night gives you twenty hours of driving for one day at the top, and the second of those driving days starts with a descent nobody enjoys on tired legs. If your group only has a weekend, Yercaud is four hours from Chennai rather than ten and we would genuinely rather send you there.
Which Urbania should you choose?
The 13 seater, on comfort as much as capability. Ten hours seated is a long time, and ten people in a 13 seater have room that the same ten do not have in a fuller vehicle. It also takes the Palani hairpins more easily and parks far better in Kodaikanal's congested centre.
Warm clothing is the hidden luggage factor and it catches Chennai groups out consistently. Kodaikanal is genuinely cold at night from December to February, and a group that packed for Chennai's heat and then added jackets fills a vehicle faster than the headcount suggests.

- Dindigul — Turn west for the hills. Last major town on the plain.

Road notes
Nine to ten hours, of which eight are straightforward highway and the last is the climb. It is not a difficult drive so much as a long one, and the difficulty is concentrated entirely at the end when everyone is already tired.
Season
October to March is clearest. April to June is peak season and the town is crowded. Afternoon cloud closes visibility on the upper ghat year-round, which matters more on this route than most because a late departure guarantees you climb in it.
Getting around at Kodaikanal
Keep the vehicle. Kodai's centre is walkable for the lake, Coaker's Walk and Bryant Park, but Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves and the upper viewpoints are spread along the ridge road and moving twelve people to them by local transport is slow and expensive.
Berijam Lake needs a forest permit obtained in advance, with a daily cap on vehicles. It cannot be decided on the morning. Tell us at booking if it matters and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable for your dates rather than promising and disappointing you.

How long is the drive from Chennai to Kodaikanal?
Nine to ten hours for 520 km. Eight of those hours are straightforward highway and the last is the ghat climb. It is a long drive rather than a hard one, but the hard part comes at the end.
What time do we have to leave?
Before five in the morning, and we are not being dramatic. A seven o'clock start puts you on the upper ghat in afternoon cloud or after dark, neither of which you want at the end of a ten-hour day.
Can we do it in one night?
You can and we would advise against it — twenty hours of driving for one day at the top, with the descent on tired legs. Two nights is the honest minimum for a journey this long.
Is there a closer hill station from Chennai?
Yercaud, at around four hours rather than ten. If your group has a weekend rather than four days, we would genuinely rather send you there than sell you this drive twice. Yelagiri is closer still.
Do we need a permit?
Not for the route — it stays within Tamil Nadu throughout. Berijam Lake is the exception: it needs a forest permit arranged in advance with a daily vehicle cap, and it cannot be decided on the morning.

How cold does Kodaikanal get?
Cold enough to matter at night from December to February. Groups from Chennai consistently underpack for it, and the warm clothing then becomes a luggage question as well as a comfort one.
Where do we break the journey?
Villupuram and Trichy are the natural halts on the highway, and Batlagundu is the last place to refuel before the climb. Our chauffeurs use stops that can take a seven-metre vehicle rather than improvising on a verge.
Can we stop at Trichy on the way?
Yes, and Srirangam is worth it if you have the time — but adding it to a ten-hour drive makes for a very long day. It works better as a stop on the return, or as a night in its own right if you can spare it.
Is the ghat difficult?
Well surfaced and steadily graded rather than technical, but long and continuous with genuine drops. Entirely comfortable with a chauffeur who has driven it. It is not a road to meet for the first time yourself at the end of a long day.
When is the best time to go?
October to March for the clearest conditions. April to June is peak season and the town is crowded. Afternoon cloud on the upper ghat is a year-round issue, which is why the early departure matters whatever the month.
Can we combine Kodaikanal with Madurai?
