Why an Urbania for this route
Thekkady is the shortest crossing into Kerala from Madurai and the one most groups do first. A hundred and fifty kilometres, four hours, and a climb through the Cardamom Hills that changes the air and the landscape completely — you leave the dry southern plain and arrive in spice country.
The state border is the part route planners never account for. Interstate formalities take time even when the permit is arranged in advance, which it always is with us, and a group that budgeted the distance alone arrives an hour later than expected. Combined with the climb, four to four and a half hours is honest.
The other timing constraint is the Periyar boat safari. Slots run at fixed times in the morning and afternoon rather than on demand, and they fill during holidays. Book yours first and tell us the slot — we will build the day backwards from it, because arriving at Thekkady and then finding out when the boat goes is the wrong order.
Which Urbania should you choose?
The 13 seater is the sensible default. The climb suits any of the three with an experienced chauffeur, but Kumily town has limited parking and resort approaches along the reserve edge vary from surfaced drives to narrow tracks.
Because Thekkady is usually one leg of a Kerala circuit rather than a destination on its own, size for the whole trip. A group continuing to Munnar or Alleppey afterwards is carrying real luggage by the second day, and a 13 seater that felt generous leaving Madurai fills quickly.

Flat and quick to Theni, then a sustained climb through the Cardamom Hills with the state border partway up. The ascent is well surfaced but continuous, and the border adds time that route planners never show.
Season
September to March is the most comfortable and the best for wildlife on the lake. The monsoon is heavy here and the ghat runs in cloud, though the forest is at its most spectacular. Boat slots fill during school holidays and long weekends regardless of season.
Getting around at Thekkady
Keep the vehicle. The reserve entrance, the spice plantations, Kumily's market and the viewpoints are spread around the area, and the interesting parts of a Thekkady stay are not within walking distance of each other.
Two things need arranging rather than improvising. The boat safari runs in the forest department's own craft on fixed slots. And the plantation tours worth doing are the working estates rather than the roadside operations near the town — ask us and we will point you at the former.

Is the ghat difficult for a long vehicle?
It is a sustained, well-surfaced climb rather than a technical one — nothing like Valparai. A 17 seater manages it comfortably with a chauffeur who knows the road. The constraints at Thekkady are parking and resort approaches rather than the ascent.
