The Kabini backwaters along the southern edge of Nagarahole. The reservoir draws animals to open shoreline in the dry months, which is why March to May gives the better sightings even though October to February is the more comfortable time to travel.

Why an Urbania for this route
Nagarahole is the other half of the Mysuru wildlife proposition, and for many people the better half. Under two and a half hours on flat roads, and the Kabini side in particular has a reputation for sightings that Bandipur, closer to the main highway, does not quite match.
As with Bandipur, none of the planning is about driving. It is about the safari slot and the overnight closure on the reserve roads. A dawn safari cannot be reached by setting out from Mysuru that morning, so a first-light drive means staying on the fringe the night before. Groups discover this at the wrong moment surprisingly often.
Your vehicle does not go into the reserve. Safaris run in the forest department's own jeeps and buses from the safari centre, and private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. What the Urbania does is get twelve people to a fixed slot together, on time, with somewhere to leave bags and warm layers for a cold early start — which on a trip run to a timetable is worth more than it sounds.
Which Urbania should you choose?
The 13 seater is comfortable for most groups and the roads present no difficulty for any of the three. Luggage is rarely the constraint on a wildlife trip, so choose on headcount.
The variable is the resort approach. Properties on the Kabini side range from surfaced drives to rough estate tracks, and a 17 seater that handles the main road easily can still be stopped by the last four hundred metres. Send us the property name at booking and we will check it.

Road notes
Short, flat and easy — under two and a half hours on ordinary roads. As with Bandipur, the discipline is timing rather than terrain, governed by safari slots and by the overnight closure that applies on the reserve roads.
Season
October to February is the most comfortable. March to May is hot and sightings are often better as animals concentrate at the water. The monsoon is green and quiet with fewer visitors. Safari slots fill at weekends and during school holidays whatever the season.
Getting around at Nagarahole
Keep the vehicle. The two sides of the reserve — Veeranahosahalli to the north and Kabini to the south — are a long way apart by road, resorts are scattered, and there is effectively no local transport.
It is also worth knowing what pairs well. Coorg is close from here and Iruppu Falls sits between the two, so a Nagarahole and Coorg circuit from Mysuru is one of the better four-night trips available anywhere in the south. Continuing south into Wayanad instead crosses into Kerala and needs an interstate permit arranged before dispatch.

Parking
Resorts have their own parking. Safari vehicles belong to the forest department, so your Urbania waits at the safari centre rather than entering the reserve.

About 95 km and two to two and a half hours on flat roads through Hunsur. Which gate you are heading for matters more than the distance — the Kabini side to the south and Veeranahosahalli to the north are a long way apart by road.
Can we drive from Mysore for a dawn safari?
No. The reserve roads close overnight, so a first-light safari means staying on the fringe the night before. This is the most common planning mistake on both Nagarahole and Bandipur, and it cannot be worked around on the morning.
Can our Urbania go on the safari?
No — safaris run in the forest department's own vehicles from the safari centre and private vehicles are not permitted on safari routes. Your Urbania waits at the centre. Anyone offering a safari in a private van is not offering a legitimate safari.
How do we book a safari slot?

Is Nagarahole better than Bandipur?
The Kabini side has a reputation for better sightings, and it is quieter than Bandipur, which sits on the main highway. Bandipur is easier to reach and pairs more naturally with an onward trip to Ooty. For wildlife alone, most people would choose Kabini.

Yes, with one caveat: safaris start very early and run in open forest department vehicles that are cold at dawn and have no facilities. That suits some children and not others. The drive itself is short and easy, which helps.
What else is there besides the safari?
Birdwatching along the backwaters is exceptional and needs no permit or slot, and the reservoir edge is worth time in its own right. Beyond that, honestly, not a great deal — which is rather the point of the place.
