Athirappilly on the Chalakudy river, the widest waterfall in Kerala. Its flow depends entirely on the southwest monsoon, which is why the same falls are spectacular in July and a fraction of that by April.

Why an Urbania for this route

Athirappilly is the easiest good day trip out of Coimbatore and one of the few in this region that involves no climbing at all. Through the Palakkad gap, across the plain, and the falls are there — three and a half to four hours on flat road with a state border in the middle of it.

The thing that decides whether the trip delivers is not the driving but the season. The falls are fed by the southwest monsoon and their flow varies enormously across the year. In July they are genuinely spectacular. By April they are a fraction of the photographs that made you want to come. We will tell you honestly what to expect for your dates rather than let you find out on arrival.

The Kerala crossing means an interstate commercial permit, arranged before dispatch rather than negotiated at the border. It is not expensive and it is not optional, and it is the one administrative thing on an otherwise very simple day.

Which Urbania should you choose?

Any of the three manages the roads, which are flat and wide throughout with no climb. Choose on headcount. The only local consideration is the parking at the falls, which fills at weekends and in season and favours the shorter vehicle when it is busy.

If this is a day trip, luggage is irrelevant. If you are continuing to Munnar or Kochi afterwards — which a lot of groups do, since Athirappilly sits between Coimbatore and both — then size for the longer trip.

June to September is when the falls are at their most powerful and the road is at its wettest. October to January gives good flow with easier driving. By March the flow drops considerably, and a group arriving in April expecting the photographs they saw will be disappointed.

Getting around at Athirappilly

The falls themselves are a short walk from the designated parking, and the path down to the base is steeper and rougher than most people expect. Going down is easy and coming back up in the heat is the part groups underestimate. Tell us if anyone would rather stay at the upper viewpoint.

Vazhachal is a short drive further along the same road and quieter, and Charpa is on the way between them. Having the vehicle makes all three a single easy morning rather than a choice, which is the main argument against treating this as a bus trip.

Is it very crowded?

At weekends and in season, yes, particularly after mid-morning. An early start is the single most effective thing you can do about it, and it also gives you the better light.

Is swimming allowed?

Not at the falls themselves, and the river below is dangerous during high flow regardless of what anyone tells you. This is a place to look at rather than to swim in, and we would rather say so plainly.

Is Thrissur worth stopping at?

If the timing suits, the Vadakkunnathan temple is a genuine stop rather than a detour for its own sake. It sits on the natural halt point, so it costs an hour rather than a rearrangement of the day.
